Mako knocks Raleigh down a few pegs while the Wei Triplets in the background are just loving it (Stacker nods in solemn agreement).
I appreciate Raleigh’s sort of shocked blink at her knocking him, then his expression of total awe right afterwards. THAT’S NOT HOW YOU’RE SUPPOSED TO ACT WHEN SHE QUESTIONS YOUR MANHOOD. And I approve of that reaction.
"Did she just questi-…MY GAWD SHE’S REGAL."
You just know that he’s debating Yancy as kid name, or dog name in that last gif.
"We’ll have two kids. They’d better look like her. And I wonder if she’ll let me have a border collie."
the thing that gets to me is that Mako sees Raleigh, she understands him and reads the fight well enough to know exactly what he’s doing, and that’s why she’s annoyed
because she read him, and given his reluctance to have another pilot in his head - to know and be known like that - it would be completely understandable for him to feel conflicted or hesitant about it, and in fact most movies/shows would have gone that route and made his manpain the focus of the narrative
and instead he’s just watching her with that expression of….homecoming, like he finds solace in her
(ymmv, but I didn’t read Mako’s criticism = questioning his manhood - like even if Raleigh wasn’t so Raleigh, she’s the officer running the trials, she’s supposed to be assessing his performance with the candidates. he steps out of line by stopping and challenging her, she’s just doing her job.
of course, because this is Raleigh, his challenge isn’t to her authority at all - he speaks up because he thinks Mako’s displeasure is unfairly critical of the other candidates, and points out that she’s the one who picked them out. and…that’s when she responds, and he realizes that she was reading him all along. and he decides, in a split second, that he wants to know this woman, and be known by her…in any context, that would be intimate and powerful, but for Raleigh? I don’t have words for how huge that is, how trusting - he is so sure of her strength and character, interested and awed and delighted by everything about her)
